*Further Information*

*Digital image correlation (DIC) has emerged as a powerful noncontact technique for full‐field displacement and strain measurements in experimental mechanics. The increasing popularity of Python in scientific computing has resulted in the development of several free and open‐source DIC software packages. However, the rapid evolution of these packages requires an up‐to‐date, comprehensive analysis to guide the DIC community. This paper presents a thorough analysis of current free and open‐source Python‐based DIC software packages designed for full‐field displacement and strain measurements. After a detailed review of each package, a practical comparative analysis is conducted to evaluate various aspects such as features, supported algorithms, user interface, performance metrics, integration with the Python ecosystem and community support. This comparative evaluation reveals a range of Python‐based DIC solutions, each with unique strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, the paper identifies common challenges within the field and suggests future research directions. Thus, this work provides valuable insights for selecting appropriate Python‐based software for specific applications and highlights promising avenues for further development in experimental mechanics and DIC technology within the Python ecosystem.
